Networked Writing and Research

The NWR is a teacher training lab and specialized graduate classroom run by the English department, and staffed by a full time faculty member who specializes in networked communication and pedagogy support.

The primary mission of the lab is to facilitate the use of technology in the First Year Composition Program, primarily by training all teachers new to the program in the appropriate uses of web-based technology in composition.

A secondary mission of the lab is to support the use of technology by all members of the English department. To this end, the NWR schedules technology workshops on a variety of topics, including desktop basics, effective internet searching, website evaluation, word-processing basics, and more. In addition, the NWR is responsible for the maintaining the departmental web servers and for all web development (including the nifty site you are now reading ;-)

A tertiary mission of the NWR is to train graduate and professional staff who work in the lab. Staff gain advanced technology training in a variety of topics such as pedogogy support and development, advanced web page design including HTML, CSS, and even PHP and SQL, hardware support and troubleshooting, and network administration.

The quaternary mission of the NWR is to contribute to the development of tools for use in the electronic learning environment. More particularly, the NWR believes strongly in the Open Source philosophy of application development, and to this end participates in the development of several Open Source projects.
